Bought or sold a (new) home? Congratulations!

Moving is the next step. A lot of people look up to this. It's quite an arrangement to pack everything up, get it moved, unpack it again, and put everything in its right place. Not to mention the administrative hassle.

Below we give you 12 tips to move smoothly in one weekend.

1. Prepare the paperwork

Meter readings must be transferred for water, gas, and electricity. And you should also check which energy supplier offers you the best conditions.

2. Clean your new home in advance

After all, an empty house or apartment is easier to clean. Also, consider which rooms you need first and prioritize them. This often concerns the kitchen for a hot meal, the bathroom for a hot shower after a hard moving day, and the bedroom (for a good bed after a hard day's work).

3. A box of essentials

Pack some spare clothes for your moving weekend and the day after. Provide the necessary toiletries and some items that you will need anyway, such as medication, scissors or utility knife, cooking utensils, plates and cutlery, toilet paper, the charger of your smartphone, tools, garbage bags, cleaning supplies, etc. Also, arrange a chilled packaging box containing a cooling pack to store your drinks and meals for the moving day.

4. Protect fragile stuff

If you pack your clothes, use it to wrap your fragile items here, so they are protected. This way, you save on bubble plastic. Pack your plates vertically, such as vinyl records, this way. They are less likely to break.

5. You can move drawers in their entirety

A drawer is a moving box in itself. Even if you move the cupboard, they are in with you ;-) You can pack your drawers with stretchable plastic. This saves you a lot of time, and your things in the drawer stay clean.

6. Label your moving boxes

This tip seems obvious, but take it from us that it is one of the most frequently heard things: "We certainly packed it and took it with us, but which box is it in now?". In addition to what is in the box, also note the room where the box should go.

7. Buy stretchy plastic

We already recommended packing your drawers with this, but you can also use this plastic to pack furniture. This way, you protect them against possible scratches during a move.

8. Smart disassembly

If you take furniture apart, make sure you have a plan of action for putting it back together. Label the parts of the same piece of furniture so that you know what belongs together and how to reassemble it. Also, make sure that all screws, bolts and other attachments from different furniture do not get mixed up. Therefore, put them in a sealable bag and stick them on the piece of furniture to which they belong.

9. Photograph connections

Make sure you have pictures of how your TV and decoder are connected. This way, you can easily install them again.

10. The fastest way to move your wardrobe

Like we said, wrap drawers in foil. It is best to hang clothes on coat racks. Then, you pack them in a large garbage bag with hangers. This way, your clothes cannot get dirty, and you can easily move them without folding them. You can then put shoes and other items on shelves in a suitcase.

11. Running errands

Think about the last time you went shopping before you moved. Normally it is sufficient to do your last shopping 2 weeks before you move. After all, you want your fridge and freezer to be as empty as possible. Defrost both at least 24 hours in advance and make sure they are clean and dry. Be extra careful with these last devices when moving: they are delicate devices that dare to break down quickly.

12. Last but not least, pay attention to your moving friends

Make sure everything is packed when they arrive. Getting them packed takes work. Only you know what you want to keep and where you will find a place in your new home. Are there things you want to throw away? Ask around friends/family. You may make one of them happy with it.

Good luck with your move :-)
